Blogging about your passion is one of the most widely advised exhortations from blogging experts across many fields and genres. There is something indescribably appealing about dropping a soul crushing 9 to 5 to divulge full time in a passion of your choosing. The idea seduces many, but is this practical advice? Can your passion really support you full time? I argue that your passion or a related passion is most likely already supporting many industries and bestowing some industries with billions, so why not you? Why can’t this same or similar passion support you as it has supported other companies, corporations and small businesses?
Sticking to your passion has many benefits that I will enumerate more in depth. However, just as in any strategy there are drawbacks. Just because you are blogging about your passion, it does not mean that success will be easy or that the love of your topic will be enough. If not thought out properly, choosing to blog about your passion or perceived passion could be a major err.
A blog has to be consistently updated to be favored by search engines and to demonstrate professionalism. It will be quite difficult to spend the necessary time with a topic that you are not passionate about. A true passion has the potential to keep the blog flowing with unique and creative ideas. Your passion will never fail at drawing you back for another post, another social campaign or another networking opportunity. Just be sure that you use your passion to fuel a solid business strategy. It is easy to fall into the trap that passion is enough. Yes, passion is powerful enough to generate ideas but passion must be backed by the successful implementation of the more mundane aspects of blogging such choosing the best website design or the most user friendly website platform or researching which social media techniques haul in the most readership.
A financially successful blog is measured by its loyal audience and ability to attract new viewers. If you are passionate about your topic, it will be that much easier to connect with other like minded individuals and keep them engaging with your content. Your website will have greater ease appealing to an audience who are interested in the topic and you’ll be sensitive to the topic in a way that competitors will neglect. As you become more connected to your passion, you will fall in love with the topic daily which will inspire better content than your competitors and inspire your readers to become more committed to the topic.
All of this sounds great right? ‘What could go wrong?’, you might question. Well, did you really choose your passion or do you think that you choose your passion? In an era of social media and curating an image or identity online that can be loved -- or liked-- it can be easy to fall into a lifestyle or interest that you are not truly passionate about. Choosing your passion requires you to be honest about who you are and who others are. Other people are befuddled about their passion and draw a blank when prompted to state their passion. These people have not explored themselves or their environment to know their passions. So instead of exploring, their passion remains dictated by fear or by the expectations that others or outside forces have imposed on them. While others have all these unnamed passions inside of them competing for attention but have not been organized into a viable topic.
Others may have remembered a great dedication to a passion but in reality the effort might not back up this memory. It is easy to have passion for an activity that you envisioned or glamorized in your mind however you do not truly know if you have a passion unless you’ve spent significant time whether in the good times or more difficult times engaging in the activity. Therefore you might not be as knowledgeable about your passion as you thought and your blog could suffer from this. Most of the issues I’ve outlined that could arise from the goal to blog about your passion derive from incorrect conceptions of passion and incorrect conceptions about yourself or your environment. To remedy the situation, I recommend taking the time to learn, explore and love!
